CCN Email Configuration: Thunderbird 1.5

Thunderbird is FREE and can be downloaded from www.mozilla.com. Thunderbird and Firefox are the next generation derivatives of the Netscape email and web browser clients.

Thunderbird will automatically configure from any existing email settings already on your computer when the program installs.
  1. Download, install and start Thunderbird.
  2. Choose Tools from top menu. This will open a pull-down menu.
  3. Choose the Account Settings... option from the pull down menu. This will open a new window.
  4. Choose the Add Account... option box.
  5. Select the Email account radio button.
  6. Fill in the text boxes:
  7. Select the Next entry.
  8. Choose between POP and IMAP protocols. We suggest POP.
  9. Incoming Server: mail.casselton.net.
  10. Outgoing Server: mail.casselton.net
  11. Uncheck the Use Global Inbox (store mail in Local Folders) checkbox if you have multiple users reading from the same account.
  12. Select the Next entry.
  13. Incoming User Name: (use the provided name unless told otherwise by CCN)
  14. Select the Next entry.
  15. The Account Name: text box is a phrase to help you distinguish this account from possible other defined accounts. For example: Casselton.net account
  16. Select the Finish entry which will return you to the Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings configuration box.
  17. Select the Outgoing Server (SMTP) entry in the left window. Make sure the Use name and password is NOT selected. And the Use secure connection (SSL): has the selection Never
  18. Select the Ok entry.
The email address is immediately available.

In the POP protocol, a person can change an option to hold the email on the server for a short period of time AFTER reading the message. This helps those that read email from different computers.

Importing a LDIF addressbook

  1. Choose Tools from top menu. This will open a pull-down menu.
  2. Choose the Import... option from the pull down menu. This will open a new window.
  3. Select the Address Book radio button and the Next button.
  4. Select the Text file (LDIF, .tab, .csv, .txt) entry and the Next button.
  5. Select the LDIF file and select the Open button.
  6. The Address book will be loaded and select the Finish to complete the process.
